After alot of thinking I have determined I should do the most responsible thing I can think of with my tax return money.....spend it on my bike !! I have been wanting taller handlebars on my 03 heritage and just bought some new grips so I thought now would be a good time. I am looking at new bars (maybe 16"), new stainless cables, new grips which I already bought (the ness oval battisinis) and everything else to get the job done. I want to do internal wiring too.
I dont have a garage or a place to work on my bike so Im going to have it done for me. Does anyone know a round about price I am looking at?
Wow. The labor is going to be almost as much as all the parts if not more. Figure most Harley shops will charge 6-8 hours labor. An indy is a better option for the labor. The parts really depend on the brand of bars and cables. I'd say a rough estimate is around $1100 including labor. You don't need a garage to do this. Just knock it out in one day. Save yourself a grip of cash.
The labor alone, even if done by a reasonable indy, may put a huge bite on this project. And your wallet! My stealer quoted me close to $1K for a simple drag bar install and that did not include internal wiring. Did it myself and saved the coin.
With my latest mods (apes, cables, wiring...) I can't see where it will take longer that 5 to 6 hours IF all the bits and pieces are collected beforehand. Break down each phase of the project. Go through each step and make a list of EXACTLY what's needed. A little homework goes a long way!!
I just finished my second set of apes on my bike. Did both installs myself, the second was yesterday and I did it alone. I am slow and tedious so it took me about 10-11 hours total. That counts digging throug the service manual and all that too. I still have to bleed the front brake but I also installed a new console and wasted some time jacking with my new SS fuel cross over line. My dealers have always said 1K - $1200 for them to do it. Waaaaay too much for me.
You can do it in a weekend. If you buy new switches with wiring harness attached it will shorten the time required to do it vice soldering on wire extensions (in my opinion anyway).
Thanks everyone for your input. Based on all your info i feel confident I can do it over a weekend if I have all the right stuff. We just got 10" of the white stuff here in Michigan so I still have plenty of time to do all my homework and get things together. Im sure I will be back with questions when the time comes. Thanks again guys
