The filter on my Harley softail was severly stuck probably because it had been tightened with extensive and unessesary force. I tried every tool i could find which did not work partly because there is not enough space around the filter to fit these tools. The standard oil filter cap I could fit but that kept sliding on the filter. Eventually, after much frustration, I drilled three holes in the cap and attached it with screws to the filter. Worked without any problems and was a much safer alternative to the "just drive a screwdriver through it and twist it off" method.
What is wrong with your attachment or my PC that when I click on your attachment, I get a black screen
This is an interesting thread, but I still believe in using the right too for the job. This is an old school tool I have had for years, but it works for those tight filters in tight spots. No screws, punches, tricks or screw drivers required.
Had a stuck filter on a girlfriend's car one time. I didn't like the screwdriver trick, because if that didn't work then I have an oil filter with a big hole in it. I tightened a large hose clamp around the filter and the screw on the clamp gave me something to tap (pound) on. Loosened right up.
ended up drilling 2 small holes in the oil filter cap and then drove to sheet metal screws through the holes in the cap into the filter itself. worked like a charm and wasn't that messy at all. i tried 1 screw first and it wouldn't hold so i put 2 in across from each other and the filter turned right out.
to all the people who said strap wrench. it woulds great on most softails but if you have an oil cooler (i've got a harley oil cooler) the goes down between the middle of the 2 tubes you don't have any room to get one in there.
so if anyone ever has a stuck oil filter i would use the 2 screws idea. worked great. now only if it wasn't 40 and pouring down rain!!!!
what to do what to do???? i was changing my oil today and when i went to take off the oil filer (03 night train with oil cooler) the oil filter wrench rounded all the edges on the filter (filter must have been on to tight) so i just tried for 20 min to get it off and had no luck. the oil cooler isn't helping any either. what should i do now to get the oil filter off?????
If your oil filter is put on so tight or no lube on the seal here is a way to get it off. Drill three holes in the oil filter put three self tapping screws into the oil filter. Apply some heat and muscle done.
