Bought a 2005 sportster about two weeks ago. Went to get the oil filter off today but it's held on by what I call only surmise is cement. The universal metal strap-type wrench from Harley just smushed and punctured the filter.

I'll try some of the methods listed in this thread when I get time in a couple of days.

I used the screw trick and quickly removed the old filter.

I took a small piece of steel brake line and hammered the cap type oil filter remover over the top of it and the oil filter. It smashed the steel line into the filter to give it some bite. It came right out. Then I just smacked the filter to get it out of the remover. It worked pretty slick.

Another thing to try when you encounter this problem is to use a strap wrench with a strip of folded sandpaper in place to prevent the strap from slipping on the filter body. Might save the clean-up after using the screwdriver trick.

Don't buy one of those cheap rubber strap wrenches. They break under stress. Get one that is heavy cloth like (and grippy) material. I have one I can fit a 3/8" socket wrench to use as leverage.
