Cam upgrade questions
I need some advice and help from the cam gurus please. I have a 2008 FXSTC with a stage 1 (V&H Big Shot Staggered, K&N stage 1 air filter kit, and V&H FuelPak). I am wanting to upgrade the cams to increase low end & mid-range power. I don't often run in the higher RPM range so I really am not interested in a big cam... My questions are; 1- will I need to install a gear driven cam setup or is the chain drive sufficient? 2- will a Woods TW 6-6 or a Andrews 26H work well without doing any headwork or altering the stock compression ratio? I appreciate any advice & help you guys can offer, including cam selection...

Just had the Red Shift 575's put in my 08' Fat Boy and love it!
Also have the Heavy Breather and used the FuelPak before the cam change. Don't think the FuelPak will work well if you change cams, the list they have codes for is pretty short :-(
The Red Shift 575 works well with the rest of the motor being stock. Not that agressive of a cam, but improved the torque and increased what I call "ridability" on the highway.
I had the Thundermax Autotune put on at the same time. Only thing I can say now is I wish I had done it a year ago before buying the FuelPak.

You don't need to worry about gear drive with the new twin cams.. The new chain drive system is pretty good plus there's a possible issue with crank run out on them so the gears could actually be more of an issue than they would help..
There are a lot of bolt in cams.. SE204, Woods, Andrews, HQ, TMan, Red Shift, etc..
Do your research and look for dyno's for similar builds to yours using the cams you're interested.. You'll get a headache after awhile.. lol

As Rail has already said, the newer chain drive (hydraulic) is a good set-up. It's far superior to the old chain tensioner set-up. As far as cams go, I'd seriously consider the Woods TW6-6, but add a 4* advance gear to compensate for your lower compression. If you don't want to do that, take a look at the HQ 500 or T-Man 525.
