Great point. That's why I wanted some opinions... so I do not end up paying a "stupid tax" on the exhaust.

Believe me...I agonized on this decision for months. It's not an easy one and there are no wrong answers (as long as you do what you want and you make sure the bike runs well). The one major benefit of the slip ons is that you don't need to make any engine adjustment. With full exhaust, some will claim you might be ok without a tuner of some sort, but just as many will say that you will need to retune it. Add in a free flowing intake and you MUST retune. We could have a looooooong talk about options for tuning your ECM. This was the decision I agonized most over. In the end I let the HD people do a pro tuner. It wasn't cheap either ($450+labor just for the tuner). Long story short...slip-ons let you avoid the other hard questions and the cost that comes with them.

If you want to do slip ons they'll improve the sound, but they'll do nothing for the performance. This is fine for many people and they love it. If you do a full exhaust, air cleaner, and tuner you'll spend 4x as much, drastically improve the sound, and add on a noticeable amount of power and response (and your wallet will get smacked around).

The main thing is that if you think you'll want to do the full deal later, then don't waste the money now on a cheaper option. If you don't want a full stage 1 upgrade, then save tons of money, tease fools like me, and we'll all still have a good time together.

I had the Vance and Hines slipons and they're pretty loud. I make the wife wear a 3/4 helmet, so that gives her some hearing protection. She never complained.

Damn, I was on a mission to get through all of the posts since I dropped off back in the summer when my second son was born...I started back the first week of January...I think it was a PM from YoungNeg that kick started me back on this thread. Sweet bars bro, very similar to mine, and I'd have to say that we have the nicest bars around, period! Love the sweeps and sharp angles.

Anyways, I've done a few things to my bike, nothing major, but I do have a few plans for something big in March, after bike week down here in Florida.

Anyways, heres a pic of my scoot since the last that I posted anything was 6 months ago...been great riding weather down here in Miami. My MC assisted the sherrifs office on a Crimestoppers ride out to Lake Okeechobee then back down to the beach this weekend. It was just above 70 the whole day.

This is one of my favorite angles of the bike...

If all you are wanting is a deeper, louder sound then the slip ons are great. I was surprised at how much louder they are than stock, but it was a good surprise. And they are really simple to put on, but I recommend you have someone to help you... taking the stock mufflers off requires some muscle and some jerking and pulling. I didn't have the money to do a full Stage 1 so I was fine with dropping a little bit of money for a big difference in sound... I hated the stock exhaust sound... putt putt putt...

So, if you want to do it on the cheap, the slip ons are great. I would recommend picking them up from http://www.directharleyparts.com/ They have free shipping and their price can't be beat. And they ship fast!

I absolutely LOVE that fender! I think that I MUST have this! How much does it cost to prep and paint a fender in Brilliant Silver Pearl?! Seriously. I must know.

EDIT: Holy ****, nevermind. The steel fender is $500 by itself! So I am guessing at least $800-$900 total to buy the fender, prep and paint it.... Damn.

Thoughts?
I am getting some parts powder coated and do not have an eye for contrast on the Lo.
My thoughts:
Denim:Clutch Cover, primary cover, Carlini 14' Flying Apes, Lower Forks.
Vivid:Piston Risers, Laydown Plate.
I am also looking for a turn signal re-locator for the front because I do not want them on my apes.

Take a look at SGT.Jims Lo on his garage page.
It seems like he knows exactly what he's doing when it comes to powdercoating a Fat Boy Lo.
