I have a '06 Deluxe and I just ordered the matching saddlebags. I'm planning on a couple of long rides to the CA state hog rally and the Reno Street Vibrations. and I want the convenience of a tourpak so I also ordered the matching tourpak---(talk about ouch in the wallet!) Anyway, has anyone out there with a deluxe added the detachable tourpak? And did you have to order additional docking hardware? The catalog is so *%&$$*$ confusing regarding the hardware. I haven't asked my local dealer b/c I ordered through Chicago Harley for the 20% discount.
I put on the stock matching Harley hard bags with the quick release docking hardware for my upright backrest.
I believe you can simply take off the backrest and put on the new Harley rack that holds the tour pak. I assume you have purchased the large rack that the tourpack fits on.
I bought a backpak from tourmaster to hold my wife and my clothes when we did a couple of rallys. It is a fraction of the cost at $150 but does hang down on the license plate. But it will hold twice as much as the tourpak, picture attached. It just fits on the stock rack and attaches to the sissy bar backrest.
I wanted to add that the stock hard bags are very small. I pack my extra warm gloves, two sets of rain gear, tool kit, locks for helmet and disk brake, face covers, bungie cords, and a few other things and they are jamed full. No room for any clothes and hardly enough room for extra necessary riding gear. In Oregon you have to carry warm gloves and face protection due to the temp differences you will encounter up in the MTS.
So for clothes you have to look for a way to pack that stuff on the back if you are riding double. If you are riding single its not too much of a problem. Same if you have two bikes, then you can carry just one persons goodies. I like the nylon roll bags and med to large packs. They are lightweight but are strong and inexpensive. Weight becomes a factor with two up riding and packing clothes for long rides. Its fun but a bit of a hassle packing and unpacking every night/morning.
Good Luck with your choice, that tourpak costs a bloody forture when you add in the cost of that large rack.
I have the tour-pak....you need to buy the detachable tour-pak rack you can either get a solo setup or a passenger setup.
Solo Tour-Pak Rack: 53559-04A $95
Two-up Tour-Pak Rack: 53066-00B $185 (no idea why this is twice the price)
I have the solo setup to give some rider back support....you will want to feel out your setup if you get the solo....I will be moving mine forward to give me better support.
I have an '06 FLSTCI which comes stock with the studded leather saddle bags. I purchased the matching studded tour pack, detachable rack, quick detach hardware kit, and detachable side-plates for the back rest. I know it's pricy, but well worth the investment. I purchased from Benji's in VA at 20% off, plus shipping. The pack was a special order, so it took two weeks before I recieved it. Well worth the money. If you currently have a passanger backrest, I highly recommend buying the backrest detachable side plates, that way you can switch from touring to street cruiser in a matter of minutes.
Along the topic of tour pacs, I was looking on Ebay, and came across an aftermarket company that manufactures tour pacs for HD. Has anybody ever seen one of these, or have any opinions on them? You get what you pay for, and these seem awfully low priced, compared to Genuine HD stuff..... http://www.customcyclegear.com/products.html
"bluerose" Your bike is starting to look like a full Harley Dresser! Add the fairing and you have an Ultra Classic.
It looks very nice the way you have it set up and looks like it will haul a lot of goodies. The bags look nice, I like them a lot, are they "leatherworks"?
Your tourpak looks wider than the one Harley sells, is yours a stock Harley setup for the deluxe? For two up riding you get that big ole rack that fits in place of a sissy bar and then have the box as a backrest. Is the backrest pad extra or does it come on the box.
I also see that you can buy locking hardware to attach the box so that it cannot be removed without a key. Lots of options.
Here is what one looks like on a Heritage Softail. The tour pack is a very worthwhile addition if you intend to to a lot of traveling.. If you ride by yourself, you can use a T-Bag on the passanger seat and have a ton of room for stuff.
You will need docking hardware for the kit unless you already have some installed for another quick detach item. If that is the case, the hardware you already have might be the same. You'll just have to check it and see.

Actually everything on that bike is detachable....I don't ride with the tour pak that often, I will be this weekend to get it all tested and readjusted for an oncoming trip. The bags are detachable too. Have to have the windshield due to back problems, but it's detachable too. See my GALLERY for all the setups I can do....just got a full passenger seat too....all depends on what I'm doing and where I'm going on what I use.
Mine is the standard tour-pak for the deluxe the size is described as: able to hold 2 full face helmets, which it can do. For 2 up you get the Two-up Tour-Pak Rack: 53066-00B it is also detachable. The backrest pad is attached to the tour-pak. I haven't bought the locks...was considering it just haven't decided. I could see needing them at a rally maybe, where a bunch of folks that know how these come off are around.
