I have a 2007 Fatboy. I've had engine work, 103, 253 Screaming Eagle Cams, Stage 1, and a Screaming Eagle Race Tuner. About three weeks ago I started to hear a ping/rattle noise from the front end somewhere. Thought maybe it was detonation. Had to put a lower octane fuel in it on a road trip. Pretty sure I got some bad gas. So when I filled up again I put in some octane boost and 92 octane, which is what I've always put in it. The performance returned to normal. I also changed the plugs. But, the noise is still there. I have tried everything to narrow it down. I probably look like an idiot riding down the road leaning over listening. Anyway, I tightened very bolt on that thing. Brought it to the dealer they ran it in the shop, rode it and said they heard nothing. I still hear the noise when I get to the high end of the gears and/or when I roll the throttle to pass and/or accelerate. Any ideas? Thanks!
dont forget about your gremlin bell if you have one mine used to drive me nuts till i shoved a cigarette but in it to stop the ringer from bangin around
i have a gas cap rattle that does that. I also had a pinging sound that went away buy adding more fuel at that rpm and throttle position. i also had a tweet sound that i though was the exhaust. it did it with all 3 exhaust i have had. found it the other day. it was loose bolts on the windshield. acted like a reed instrument when the wind and vibration was there.
I had an similar issue last year. Drove me nuts. Tinny sound on acceleration. Finally started taking pieces of the bike off one at a time. Got down to the front exhaust heat shield. Bingo. Clamps gave all appearances and feel of being tight but were apparently worn out. New clamps solved the problem.
i have an o5 heritage, 95 inch kit added. exhaust, air cleaner, thunderhead baffles. same issue, checked every nut, bolt, light, etc. changed oil to synthetic, new plugs, went to local shop. they thought it was a timing issue since when i added the 95 inch the bike wasnt tuned w/ dyno. had engine work done 5000 miles ago and noise started 1k ago. we added a dyno jet, tuned without dyno (they didnt have one) and....still there. Its not bad on light driving, but for example if I am doing 50, hit the throttle to 70 i hear a pinging noise. hard to explain sound, ping is best explanation. Going on dyno june 3rd so will update.
