hello, i'm new to this forum idea, but i'm stuck on this one. my 1984 harley softail has had this problem for years. when starting cold, the starter seems to get stuck in mid crank. it will turn over once or twice then in mid crank just hangs up and grunts even if I let up on the starter button it still just hangs there till it finally gets it through the compression stroke then it will start.it does'nt do it when it is warm at all. the heads have been shaved .050,and ported, bigger valves, taller cam for the road, dyna 2000 ignition, s&s carb shorty, bub pipes. new harley battery they don't tell you how many cc amps. srayed contact cleaner in starter button contacts.I have changed the starter a couple of times over the years, about ready to try a hi torque starter. got any ideas out there. thanx.
Do you start it in Neutral or in gear with the clutch pulled in? If in Neutral then it's a compression issue... if in gear with the clutch pulled in you could have just enough extra drag to lug it down... try rocking the bike before hitting the starter.
