Dose any one know what size helicoil (I need to go the next size up) I need to fix primary case threads? 1985 FXST
A Helicoil is designed to replace the original screw-thread. Unless you really butchered the removal, select the same-size Helicoil. This allows the original size bolt to be used. There is normally no need to go over-size, unless you screwed it up unnecessarily. Just check the drill size recommended for the correct thread to be sure that it will cleanup.
The treads were damaged to begin with. They had a helicoil in before and stripped out.
I don't know if the same size helicoil will take hold.
I would like to put the same size in so I can use my chrome bolts.
I will have to drill the old helicoil out, just thought it would go better if I put a little bigger bolt in there to make sure I get a good fit with the new helicoil.
