Buy a carburated bike if you want to be able to work on it. Buy an injected bike if you don't want to have to.

1st thing take a MSF class
2nd rent the bike your thinking about....
Riding a Heritage is a lot different than a Dirt Bike....
more than likely your going to rent a newer bike 96,FI,6 speed...
then decide on your budget.... and then see what's available....
don't know if you like to work on your own bike or not... but IMO you can work on either... you just need different tools
I have grown fond of FI because all I have to do is hook my laptop up to make subtle changes...

First, let me thank you for your service to our country. Its people like you that allows us to be free to do the things others can not, like riding. Next, I would take a safety course to ensure you know how to operate a motorcycle. My wife did 6 yrs ago and has been riding her own Harley ever since. Next, the new model year is coming up in July. I would wait till your dealer has open house and ride as many models as possible. Of course I would recommend my bike of choice, Heritage. Low to the ground, you sit in the seat, very will balanced, great engine with less vibration and good power, and of course I like the classic look with bags and windshield. Good luck in your purchase and make sure you post pics of your new ride.

Hello and welcome! I am new here and to riding, so I will not give bike advice, but I will say that a Rider Safety Course is well worth the time invested and will come in handy one day.
As far as bikes go, my decision was based on economics, but will move up the line in time hopefully.
Thank you for your service as well.
