I had my bike and jeep stolen in 2006, both within two months. The bike fork lock is useless. Any relatively strong person can wrench the handlebars and break the pin. At home I use two chains now. One chain secures the back tire to the garage and the other chain locks the front tire to the frame.
When out i use a brake lock. The intent isn't to make the bike impossible to steal but to make it inconvenient for the thief. They will either not want to spend the time and effort on your bike or look for someone else's bike that isn't as protected.
My Deuce was stolen and recovered same day last year. Ignition was locked and they just overpowered fork lock (which was easy fix when recovered) and walked it 150 yards to hide and wait for dark/truck. It was in my condo underground garage in gated area and can only be accessed when my wife's car is not parked in her slot. I park it in front of my car but bike cannot get out with wife's in way. Since then I have added a removable lock that fits over rear brake disc. It gives off tone when moved and keeps wheel from rotating. All it really does is add some peace of mind that I have done what I reasonably can. YouTube has a couple videos of bike thefts....one on busy street with lots of pedestrians....used a minivan and 3 guys...took all of 10-12 seconds start to gone. Here in Texas they end up as parts or on down to Mexico. John
