At 62, what in the hell am I doing ? Buying a Fat Boy is on my bucket list !!! Haven't riden since '78 and now have the fever. With so many HD choices, it not an easy decision. Can anyone offer a comparison between the Fat Boy and a Wide Glide or softail as far as ride, handling etc ?
I bought a new Heritage at '62' about a year ago. I'm working on 10,000 miles before it's a year old. I think at this age a softail is about as easy to handle as any bike out there. A little lower seat height than the Wide Glide. Go for it.
As far as bike choices, I would agree that a Fatty will get you closer to the ground which may or may not be important to you. My suggestion is to test ride. You may find another model that suits you better.
Either or, I went to get my Fat Boy for my 60th birthday, ended up riding a Heritage home instead, it had the bags and windshield already attached. Haven't regretted a minute of it, enjoy.
I rode all the time, moto x and street in the 70s and early 80s and then stopped until 2004 and bought a Sportster then a RK and and a Fat boy for the past 6 years I ride about 20,000 a year and love it. Nothing wrong with scratching that itch, buy the bike and have fun. But I would suggest that you do more than test ride them first, rent each of the models that you think you like and ride them a day then make your decision. Many dealers rent and some will even split days so you can ride 2 bikes in a day for the price on 1 day. In my area the rental rate is $ 125 a day that will save you a lot if you make the wrong choice and want to trade and take a big $ loss.
I thought you had a crisis? Like NOT being able to get a bike. If I had my choice of any new bike I think I'd be looking at the new S.E. softail convertable.
Last year, at 60, my wife bought me an '08 Heritage as a surprise birthday gift. Hadn't ridden in many years. While the initial gift was a Fat Boy, I opted for the Classic because it fit me better. I have since looked at Road Kings and Street Glides and decided to stay with the Heritage. It just feels best. I do wish that it had twin front discs. That's on my list of upgrades.

Go with the Fatboy if it's on your bucket list. Great bike and handles well. But if you think you're going to get the itch to tour after buying, you might want to take a look at the Heritage. Basically the same bike, only with more bling.
