Like others have said it depends on what you want in the end.
I had the Electra glide & Ultra.
Now I have a Deluxe with a batwing & hard bags with a RickRak loaded with a dry bag (for long trips).

I have a stereo with four speakers for music when I want it.
I did do some work on the inner fairing to get a tighter fit.
But up to about 80 the softail is great (normally that is about my max speed).
I prefer cruising over freeway blasting.
Above that the touring bikes (Ultra) shine over the softail (IMHO) but it hasabout a 300 +/- pound advantage {higher CG also}.
One real nice feature is I can pull the Deluxe in the garage and remove the fairing in under 5 minutes (takes longer for the hard bags).
I have been looking for a good set of ghost brackets that will support the hard bags.

Default I know it's an old title

I understand this is a old thread but there's a lot of BS information in this and you gave a good realistic thoughts.

Used Hard Bags off E Bay $500 -1000 ( depending on your luck)
or
Calvary Fiberglass Hard Bags $ 600

They also make the rear fender inserts to close the gap between the bags and fender

Go on the Cycle Visions or Sumax sites they have pictures

I was just about to buy and Electra Glide Fairing and I heard that if installed on my 01Fatboy it would cause wobble at 70 mph!!!
anyone experience wobble with StreetGlide Or Electra Glide fairings?
The comment is the Soft Tail Rake is completely different.
