harleydad, since I'm looking into getting a set of the 42D bags I know that due to to large size of the bags a large mounting bracket is left on the bike with the bags removed. Heres a picture of the bracket.
This maybe a problem for a lot of customers who like to take of there bags off periodically. I have to admit that it is rather unsightly.
Personally, I like the added storage of the large bags and think that the bike looks just as good with or without bags. I have no problem
running with the bags full-time.

I guess that with those saddlebags the rear axle nut-cover is out of the question, right???
