Left front driving light/blinker bulb burning out constantly
hi folks,
wondering if any of you have seen this before? on my Custom, after about 4 or 5 rides, the front left bulb, driving light and blinker, die. no other lights are impacted(all the others are the originals that came on the bike). I detect no electrical issues anywhere on the bike.
I also have tried both Stanley and Harley bulb replacements and they all die about the same time. I have gone through 6 or 7 blubs within the last few months.
Id guess some of the wires may be gently chaffed causing a ground. I had that problem with my tail light bulb. When i redid my bike and took off the rear signals i found a small spot on the wire leaving just a small piece exposed. Never had the prob again.
Cheap china crap! go to napa and get some heavy duty 1157's. They have a support in the middle of the filiment. use plenty of dioelectric in the socket!
All good advise, but one added note.
Make sure the two contacts at the bottom of the socket are clean and corrosion free 'before' you put dielectric grease on the bulb and in the socket.
Any kind of corrosion will 'load' the circuit causing the bulb to burn out much faster than normal.
Same problem with the same light on my 2008 Fatboy . . . I also notice that the light is brighter on the left side then on the right side. Looking at the posts I will try some dielectric grease and see if that helps.
I have seen where the ground is not good on a bulb and this makes the bulb blow out. Also if the ground strap from the battery to the frame or engine is not the best it will cause the alternator to over charge sending more than 14 volts to all components. Just a thought.
+1 with Rockyriver sounds like you definitely have a ground problem but since it only affects that one bulb I would concentrate my attention to the ground side of that circuit.
thanks so much for the input. I will check for any wire chafing, clean the contacts, and try the grease.
speaking of NAPA, I did try their bulbs and they burned out much faster than the HD's, BUT they were, I think, the 1123's....I will go pick up some 1157's and try them.
