Now I know we had a whole thread going on about this the other week. I just want to revisit the topic from a different angle.
I have a 2009 FLSTC (Heritage Classic).
Now I have been having recently the same problem that after filling her up (no over filling) that I would get gas leaking out. I was reading and writing in the other thread, and tried some of the tips offered there.
Then this weekend when I filled her up again I notice the same leaking. But this time I was trying to pay more attention. I am not sure it is the gas cap, there was nothing to be seen around the gas cap. That was all dry. I only notice the leak at the bottom of the consol where it meets the leather tank cover. The leather soaks up with gas, and I notice the change in color (and smell). As soon as I noticed it (2 miles from the gas station) I stopped and had a look. Around the gas cap it was bone dry. But at the bottom of the console where it meets the leather tank cover, there was definite gas leaking.
Is this indicative of a different issue? Anyone have any ideas or experience with this?
It sounds like it is leaking out of of the top top plate which is under the console. I had the same issue a few weeks ago. I didn't fill the bike as full and was fine. I also tightened the bolts on the top plate.
No problem. this happened to me two weeks in a row. Now when I fill I just stick the pump in as far as it will go and when the pump clicks off I consider it full.
My neighbor has the same problem with his 09 Heritage. I don't on mine. The dealer replaced the gas cap which stopped it for a while but it is leaking again. I'll have to tell him about the top plate. How do you get the console off? Haven't really looked at it yet but I'll take any hints you have.
My 2002 FLSTFI sprung a small leak at the bottom 2 bolts that hold the top plate to the tank. Somehow vibrations made them loose. The top plate screws are NOT reusable. The screws are special with a nylon collar to seat the top plate to the gasket to the tank. On use, the nylon gets smashed to form a tight seal.
I was all though the last post as well. Mine is leaking too. I think we should all complain in some way to HD. This sound's like a safety recall to me.
OK. Like I said I've been through both major posts dealing with this. Took the cap off, turned the seal around and rode today. Stopped for gas (over 90 degrees out). Filled it up (not too full though). Put the cap back on until it clicked. Pushed it down and it must have turned another half turn before it clicked again. Took off kind of hard and had no gas spill. I believe this is the 'clicker' getting weak, the seal relaxing, or a combination of both. Not too worried at this point but I'd hate to test this out on a new custom paint job like one of our posters did. Hate that for him.
