My 2002 FXST has the standard black finish short-stemmed HD mirrors. I have started to have a problem where the left mirror will sometimes change position on the ball-type mount that holds the mirror. That is, the position of the mirror will change and I have to re-adjust it. Seems to happen most under heavy acceleration, like the vibration is getting to it or something.
Obviously, the tension on that ball mount that holds the mirror isnt sufficient. Ive looked and there doesnt seem to be a way of increasing that tension.
Wanted to see if anybody knows of a way to accomplish this (short of buying new mirrors).
I had the exact same problem about two or three months ago. As it is, I'd have to go look at my bike to remember the fix, but it took less than 10 seconds after explaining the situation to a tech at the local dealer. He just told me what to do and I did it.
Why isn't my memory working?!
Hopefully, somebody else can be more helpful. I just wanted you to know thus is an easy fix and certainly nothing to be worried over.
I tried rotating the mirror a couple turns around on the ball mount to see if that would tighten it up but it didn't. Just guessing, have no idea if that would make a difference. I'll dig into the service manual and follow up if I find anything useful there...
Are there 2 little screws on the back of your mirror on either side of the stem?? If so, tighten them.
Looking at his other pics there's no screws on the mirrors. I have the same mirrors, except chromed, on my Heritage. They aren't loose but I'm interested in knowing the answer to his question also.
Sorry to take so long on getting back here. I've checked my mirrors out, and cannot remember the fix whatsoever. I'm surprised nobody has been able to help you out here, as this was an easily fixed problem for me.
I guess at this point, my only recommendation would be to ask a mechanic at an indy shop, or go to the dealer and ask the techs there.
I'm curious if there would be anything on this in the service manual...?
Otherwise, just forget about it and use this as a good excuse to buy some NEW styling mirrors.
Had the same problem with the stock mirrors on my NT. No adjustment screws, just a ball and socket which over time loosens up.
I eventually;
(1) properly positioned them.
(2) carefully removed them from the handlebars.
(3) laid them flat on a bench and soaked the ball and joint area with super glue.
So far, they have held their position but I expect vibration will eventually brake the glue.
