Okay, so I Know this thread is over a year old, but it is what came up in my search. I want to do a 160 on the back of my FXST. Can I do that with the stock 16x3.00 rim? And if not I want to go to an 18" wheel 160 tire. What rim size do I need 18x????
Metz tire chart says that the ME 880 in 180/55 (the only 180 -18" they make) wants a 5.5-6.0 rim on a 18" wheel.
It will have a 183mm (7.2") width and 657mm (25.9") diameter.
My previous bike was an '01 fxst. With a HD wide tire kit (narrow belt) I managed to stuff a Dunlop 160 under the stock fender. I had a flat in Canada while riding to the HD 100 Anniversary, and the Sudbury HD is also a Honda dealer. The tire they put on was for a Goldwing. When I got to the celibration the Dunlop reps were surprised that the combination worked.
I put a 160/80/16 Metz ME880 on my '05 Train. From what I hear though, it's about the same width as a 150 Dunflop. The Metz 160 was a manufacturer recommended upgrade for the stock config., but I think they stopped making it this year.
I'll correct myself. According to the site they DO still make the 160/80/16, and it is a recommended upgrade on my bike. However, here is the link to the fitment chart for your '01 standard, which shows a 140 as the "over size" recommendation.

Yes here's mine with the bob tail and the fatboy fender. a little massaging is all that is needed.
160 metz on a 16/3. Both the stock wheel and RR are 16/3.
A couple years earlier with stock wheel.
Same stock Train wheel on my 96BB
Lots of parts interchange just like the 50-60"s bikes.Don't let the dealer tell you different.E-bay and swap meets are your best bets for parts on the cheap.Do a search for Chop's fat tire fat build and see how he stuffed a 200 under there with mostly stock parts.
A few years ago I stuffed a 170 tire under a stock width fender on my 03 fxst. It was on an 18x4.25 inch rim. I think it was a Dunlop. There was room for more rim and tire as far as belt clearance went but that was the absolute most you could fit under the fender.
