I have all the parts and a workshop manual ready to install my apes on my softail.... but not sure where to start? Do I pull the tank first? or take off the all the handlebar controls?
Does anyone have a link to a step by step guide or something to help those of us who are a little out of our depth?
Make sure you have some transmission fluid and the clutch release cover gasket. You have to drain the transmission and pull that cover to replace the clutch cable. You might have to pull your exhaust as well to get that cover off.
So much for "Our kit has everything you need"....uh huh....need brake fluid too....and some fuel line to either block or drain the crossover....no tellin what else I'm gonna find I need.....

Thanks Joe... yeah so far I have the tranny fluid ready to go and I also have the exhaust off so I can get at the tranny easy now.
So should I start with the clutch cable? Or should I strat by pulling all the controls off the OEM bars?
Don't think it really matters much. I took my controls off the bars first so I could get measurements for the new cables. Left the other ends connected till I was ready to hook up the new ones.
Other than following the manual step by step best advice I could give you is to take lots of pictures along the way. Can't tell you how many times I had to refer back to them during reassembly.
I think you've got what you need...depends on the kit you got. I bought the Hill Country Customs 16" kit, pre-wired with HD connectors, chrome switch housings, rockers and levers...so all I had to buy was: new grips, transmission fluid, DOT 4 brake fluid, and that clutch cover gasket. At least, that's all I've had to buy so far.
My Samsons should arrive today (thanks Drew!!!) so I'm going to do everything at once...since I have to take the exhaust off anyway.
I'm doing: 16" apes and Samson true dual with fishtails. I'm also just about due another rear tire, so I'm going to do both front and rear with whitewalls. While the tires are off and the front brake system bled, I'm also going to replace the rear fluid and both front/rear brake shoes. Might as well while it's in this disassembled state anyway.
Not sure it would be much different on a softail but I didnt remove my tank, or my exhaust. Also didnt drain more than a drop or two of tranny fluid. Some people make things out to be harder than they are. Take your time and youll be fine.
