Technically to get the absolute best performance (apparently) but not necessary. You will likely feel the bike wind up quicker with big bore baffles but have a tad less TQ and the reverse if you are putting in quiet baffles but the engine will be able to cope!
I swapped several times between the BSS quiet and normal baffles quite happily! I now have a PC autotune module which takes care of that type of thing. I'm about to swap pipes to D&D lowcats and not planning to dyno (apart from to see what numbers it is making!)
