Default 103 and cams

So I had a moment of weakness and ordered a 103 kit with a set of 255's. I've been thinking about some engine work for a while now, and was gonna save it for the winter, but anyways... I did some research to figure out what the best route to go was, and everything kept leading me back to the standard 103 and 255's. The guys at the shop kept telling me that to keep the bike drivable and reliable, this was the best way to go. All the power you need with none of the headaches... Any comments? I'm sure a lot of you guys have this setup, what do you think of it? Next step is head work, but that's gonna have to wait. I feel bad enough about spending money I don't have... lol.

I'll take low end torque and reliability over a big headache any day!

I am putting a cam in my 88B to get low end torque and replace the cam tensioners of course. Yes my mechanic says the same thing. Cam it, tune it with a SERT and ride. Should be completely reliable with better power. Cam is the cheapest way way to get a little more power. Go for torque!!!!

I have that exact set up with big shot longs and Q baffles, with a sert, and SE air breather on an 07 FLSTC. I think you will be very happy with it, just give it time to loosen up a bit after the build. Mine has about 7500 miles on the build and it had 21,000 miles on it when I had it done, I love it, pulls like a caterpillar from about 2000 to 4500 RPM.

Mine has been flawless, runs great and has lots of power. That and I got a really great deal on it.

@ the ones that did the 103" kit, did you install compression releases on the stock heads?

at least check out the newer 551 S&S cams... our master wrench at out dealership likes them better....

his tune does not have the dip and they hang in longer than the 255's, while they are still stump pullers...

Sounds like I should be happy with it... and no, I don't think they're doing the decompression release valve. They said not to bother until i get the heads done.
