the only thing i did was wash it a couple of months ago, but i haven't had a chance to ride since then. Im wondering if maybe i knocked loose a small peice of gravel or dirt that maybe fell into one of the jets. but Cleaning is definately a must right now. Was just wondering if, while i had it off, if i did the carb mod which one is the better value.

I put a thunderslide on my dad's 02 standard and it didn't effect the mileage much or any at all but he is a very relaxed rider and doesn't get in a hurry.

Aside from the thunderslide, the Dynojet kit has a "stepped" needle instead of the tapered needle in the CV carb. The combination of needle setting and slow jet can affect mileage more than the main jet. I am just saying that it is pretty common to experience a drop in mileage when the complete dyno jet kit is installed. That has certainly been my experience and, from what I read and hear, the experience of many others.

The main point is that the CV carb is a good piece of hardware and relatively easy to tune. Secondly, if you decide to "upgrade" the CV, it would be best if you sorted out any existing issues before you do. Good luck.

Same thing happened to my bike this summer, outta the blue actually. I ended up having some gunk in my tank, drained it and installed an in-line fuel filter. That way, any debris is caught before it gets to the tank. Runs like a top now, and if you put the filter in the line beneath the tank, it's not noticable. I just run a cheapo car filter, no need for chrome under there.

Just my $0.02.

What I did was send my Carb to Wally at this web site http://www.harleydavcvcarbrebuild.com/ He took my carb, rebuilt it and I had it back in about 8 days. I gave him all the detail of the mod's I did to the engine(cam, heads, exhaust, air breather) and he used that info to jet the carb PERFECTLY! It doesn't pop or hiccup. It idles great, has very quick throttle response, and with 2 up riding I get 49 to 50 MPG. It only cost $145.00. After seeing this guys web site you can see all the work he does.

I also had a similar thing take place about a month ago. Turned out to be a bag plug wire and only happened when the bike got hot. Take the steps to check everything first and make sure you do the easy things first. No need to modify your carb if it was already running right.

Alot of great info guys thanks a bunch. I didn't think about testing the plug wires but i'll do that first thing after work. I probably look at emptying the tank and installing fuel filter. Seen some nice small clear ones at OReily's the other day. May not be a bad idea. don't know if it makes a difference or not but very seldom do I run anything other than SHELL gas in it. hopefully that wouldn't be bad gas but you never know.

Again thanks abunch guys, i appreciate it.

I also only run good gas in mine, but you still get stuff in there. Just sayin.
