Come on Norm since the inception of SMOG on cars in the early 70's fuel economy has decreased not increased. we burn more fuel with the same or less emissions per gallon I agree what about all the pollution that is caused to manufacture all of this necessary equipment to put on our cars. Yes technology will continue to improve performance no matter what happens, Non of this is for the better of you and I. the single most pollution causing problem on any car is the tires. Did you ever stop to think about where all that rubber goes that wears off your tires but we have done nothing about that, Hmmm just maybe because they are Oil based just a thought.

A quick Google has a large amount of articles showing the opposite of your claim.
This is just to 2004, and there have been several technology changes/improvements since then. Chevy, Ford and Dodge are have cars on the market, or are about to bring cars to the market, that are in the 40 range. In 2007 they did not exist, if they did I would be driving one instead of an import. My next car will be a US built one as long as they continue the trend to be competitive in the areas I am interested in.
Growing up I never heard about tires being an issue for pollution, something new for us to worry about, more tires = more pollution. As an FYI, Bridgestone has a new technology for reducing those free floating particles we are all breathing. I would expect that all the major players start looking at tires like this. http://www.drivers.com/article/855/
We are getting way off topic here from the OP, however, I can not resist a good debate. Show me your source for your claim.
Mufflers do NOT reduce emissions, they "MUFFLE" the noise and reduce sound.
The Pollution aspect of the argument is the Politicians way of getting those who would normally not care about the topic to rally behind them.
Smoke & Mirrors.
(before some one brings it up, YES mufflers help reduce emissions in cars and trucks, but indirectly. They help maintain exhaust pressure and hold exhaust back in order to help the CATALYTIC perform its job.)
Ya that will happen, every one will just start to police themselves. If you havent noticed People love making laws and taking away the Freedoms that they dont particularly care about, and then others take theres, its a big circle, Look some Biker thats angry about a pipe law just said they should make cell phones deactivate when a car is in gear, Thats people for you, every one wants to outlaw what they dont like, SO me I will enjoy every thing i can while its still legal, and hopefully find ways too when its not, cuz Americans are making Americans not free.
All the world improver wants is a world filled with people who think like himself. They are the pinnacle of all egoist.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed Senate Bill 1449, effectively reducing possession of less than an ounce of pot from a misdemeanor crime to an infraction
He got 1 thing right I say Put on quiet pipes and burn a fatty =P
Norman I should of know you would be the guy with the import. Thanks for supporting our country from all of us who have fought for it thank you. You can google all you want just stop and think for just a min. How much energy dose it take to make and install all of this smog equipment all of these things require more energy and more factories with more people commuting to and from work. Look at the whole concept not just the fluff or smoke and mirrors as some one else pointed out. Look at what has been done to our fuel its self. then back on topic as my point was mentioned by some one else it is not about emissions it is about noise remember. Noise has nothing to do with any of this neither did the smog pump or retarded ignition timing on a gas engine. How ever it did give some one a job. Why is it the the engine out of my Race Car can pass all the sniff test and engine analyzer test the only thing it fails is the visual test I can assure you there is no smog equipment on it at all other than a PCV.
I just wish some of you would look at the whole picture and get off the green peace treaty and get on the lets make it better party. you probably believe that 2012 is the end of the world as well. Or in global Warming. Just have an open mind and listen to what is really being said.

What are you talking about???? Your comments have nothing to do with the original post, I.E. a bill passed regarding loud pipes. The bill was not about adding emissions controls or smog control stuff, its about loud pipes. Loud noise is pollution, just like all those lights left on at night are light pollution. And for the record, I dislike light population as well, so I live in the country.
Here we are discussing the pros/cons of the bill and you puke that out for a response? You take a jab at me because I drive an import?? Your telling me I am not seeing the big picture? Dude, I see the big picture, its called a global economy. Stick to your isolationistic viewpoints and watch all those countries your laughing at today and calling "3rd world" pass us by.
Stick to the topic, if you want to debate your Race Car with capital letters, lets take that off line or start a new thread. My brother has a race car too. It's really loud, he is constantly pissing off his neighbors because of the noise pollution it produces. He is trying to find some quiet pipes for it so his hobby does not impact the rest of his block when he is tuning it up.

I bought a brand new Chevy Sprint in 1988. It had a 3 cylinder engine and got 55 MPG consistently. Now you have to buy a hybrid to get this kind of mileage. Follow the money. I believe it has less to do with pollution and more to do with MONEY.
