Question Trading in 07 Deluxe - Need advice

I have had my 07 Deluxe for 2 years and 34,000 miles. I LOVE this bike but I just can't stand the heat. This bike is HOT - it actually burns my legs on a hot day in traffic. I have installed heat shields, straight exhaust slip-ons, done the Stage 1, air cleaner, Nightrider IED - I am tired of trying things. I had been told by the dealer that the 2011's are not nearly as hot and the worst year was 2007. However I am not sure I believe him. My hubby wants me to buy either a Street Glide or Road King - but I really don't want the bigger bike - I love the handling of the Softail. Any advice? Is the heat issue resolved on the 2010 or 2011's?

My 2010 Heritage has run hot since the day I bought it. After spending months searching the forums it seems all of the 96ci engines from '07 to '11 run hot. It got even worse after I installed the Harley Signature seat w/driver backrest. The slightly narrower front of the Signature seat didn't block as much heat from the rear cylinder as the wider stock Heritage seat.

You don't mention which heat shields you are using. But I installed Captain Itch heat shields which work great - no more burned thighs even when stuck in traffic on the hottest days. And they can be tooled to match your bike. Mine has the Heritage style studs but there are basket weave versions to match your Deluxe. Here is a photo of my bike with the captain's heat shields in place:

He was saying what he thought you needed to hear to trade for a new one.

What seat do you have? If you move a little farther back it will help. I have noticed when using different seats it makes a huge difference. Plus look into having the bike tuned with a power commander or SERT. Talk to Jamie at fuelmotousa.com

Default 07 models and heat

I know exactly what you mean. I had a 07 Ultra and it was ungodly hot. Caused my wifes leg to be red even through her jeans. Plus it pinged so bad I couldn't use 6th gear even at 80 mph. Dealer said just the way it is! So I spent the money for stage one pipes and a/c and went with a thundermax w/ auto tune. Well, cleared up the heat issue and no more pinging, I could actually use 6th gear at 55 with no problem and my wife could ride again. So since you really like the bike, I would try a fuel management system, there are many on the market, power commanders, V & H fuelpak etc. also T-max though it is a direct replacement for your stock ecm (a bit costly too) but once you richen up the fuel mixture a bit, the heat problem should be less and probably bearable.

You mention a Stage 1, what exactly did you do. You need some sort of fuel management if you did and Air Cleaner and pipes (esp. an A/C). If you just had a dealer download, it's not good enough. I'd try a PC or SERT and get a dyno tune before buying a new bike. A new bike is going to run hot too, and you'll be back at step 1.

My Deluxe has a Heritage seat which I find much more comfortable. I seem to ride=up the back of the Deluxe seat. I had actually thought the bike was even hotter with the Heritage seat but wasn't sure if that was possible.

+1 They are force to run lean (HOT) to meet new emissions standards. You must have a really crooked dealer for them to try to sell a new bike instead of fuel management.
