I talked to a guy at my elast favorite HD dealership yesterday about the cost of a new rear fenmder form my softail standard, but he kept going on about deuce fenders and how they won't fit a standard, so I gave up.
What I'd like to have is a full-length rear fender like a Deluxe or Fatboy. Any reason those won't fit on a standard?
I was also thinking the best way might be to go with an after-market rear, like an Arlen Ness, and have it painted to match by the same indy shop that paints for the HD dealers here.
Anybody got an idea about fit (like deluxe fender on standard) and the cost of getting a replacement longer, color-matched fender from HD?
Dude, check out out this badass Night Train owned by member, Story808:
His is a 2005 with a Deluxe fender, so you might want to ask him a few questions. I've also seen a guy with a Fatboy that has a FXST fender on it, so I'm thinking it's a simple swap, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll bet Story808 can clarify for ya. More pics on his profile page.

2000-2006 rear fenders will bot right up. Keep in mind the deluxe and heritage rear fenders are a little different than the fatboy which is smooth due to the turn signal setup on them.
Your first mistake was talking to an HD dealer in the first place.
I recall asking someone in the parts dept about changing the fender. He told me it was pretty much impossible. He went on to talk about changing the trans, primary, belt, electrical system, etc... and he was a d**k while spewing all this silliness.
There was ONE HD dealer... no, actually TWO that I actually liked- one was Hudson County HD, which doesn't exist anymore... and Ocean County HD in Lakewood, NJ. Nice folks, great selection.

What he said...unless you have an 06 FXST. That just about limits your options to an 07 fatboy fender or a custom fender.

That's IT.
I agree, never ask a dealer if this or that fits your bike. I have many parts on mine that the dealer said wouldn't fit it. In NJ I like Williams HD. The parts guy there is very helpful. I was down there for a school for work last year.
Good luck with your project it shold look great when done
