Last time I took the cover off I drained the tranny first but not really sure it was necessary. Was going to try it w/o draining it this time but wanted to see if anyone has done it before. Bike will be on the jiffy stand.
No need to drain it. You will lose a little bit of oil, but it is not necessary. Top it off once the cover is reinstalled. Make sure you are on the side stand.

What cover are you removing? If it is the "Derby Cover" that is for the primary and is seperate from the transmission. As Drew said no need to drain anything, oil level is correct when it is up to the bottom of the cover. You may loose a little but no worries.
If it is the Transmission end cover you will loose a little oil, not bad if the bike is on the jiffy stand. You can top it off after
When I pulled the cover to put a new clutch cable on, I didn't drain it as some suggested here I didn't need to. Yeah, only a "little" came out as compared to how much it holds, but that **** went everywhere and I was cleaning for a while. It was a mess. When I topped it back off, I used maybe 1/4 of the bottle.
Next time, I'm draining it first and refilling it.
Just my personal first hand experience. Yes, it was on the side stand.

It sounds like he's talking about the right side clutch cable cover. As long as his bikes on his jiffy stand he will be fine.
I know I will get some flack for this but when I swapped mine I put a moving blanket against a block wall and leaned the bike over on that while a buddy made sure all was good. Didn't loose anything and since I had JUST changed my tranny fluid I was being a cheap b@stard. However I would not recommend this for obvious reasons And no alchohol was not involved.
I had 7oz drain out until I stood the bike up to adjust my bars while the cover was still off. Emptied the remaining 25 oz onto the floor. Gotta laugh at my own stupidity sometimes.
