Guys, what do you all think. My frame is already cut and raked 3degrees, but as ususal...I want more, not alot, but just a bit more. Do you think adding 3 degree cups will put me over the edge, and do you think I can keep the original fork tubes? Thanks for any help!
This article made me consider which way to go. One guys opinion

G'day all, I've had a bit to do with raked cups so I'll try and pass on what I learnt. And this may only be relative to the FXST, FXSTC & FXSTB, I have a '07 Night Train
The Vulcan cups are beautifully made (I get off on nicely machined components (who doesn't)) although they don't have a fork stop. With the the Vulcan cups Idrilled and tapped the lower triple tree to add height onto the fork bump stops byscrewing in 1/4" cap screws as without the cap screws the lower triple tree just touched the bike's frame. Remembering thatraked cupsincrease the distancebetween the upper and lower tripletree by their combined depth. The cap screwsweren't overly tricky to do if you have good tool skills andcertainly look neat. I used a piece of threaded rod, washers and nuts from a hardware store to place the cups in their position in a controlled fashion.
The raked cups from 2orangeharley are made in China and certainly look like have, in factthey may havebeen flown outof that country in the same aircraft that wasfreightingrubber dog ****.... I've seen a cup from them that looks like ithad been let go by the lathe during theits machining, it was all f#%ked up. They do have a fork stop but you need to drill and pin the lower cup for it to work, not hard but all the harder to do if the cup is all f#%ked up during its machining process.
3 degrees added to the factoryrake isn't over dramatic, noticable yes,but certainly doesn't make for a 'chopper' front end BUT the ride is not effected at all. The major positives I found that it lowers the front end to equalthe rear if its been dumped. The front forks still have full travel, compared to swapping out to shorterfork springs to lower the front end. And because the lowertriple tree is closer towards the axle itstiffens the front end.
I have recently replaced my front end with HD's inverted front end, unfortunately I couldn't use the raked cup kit with this front end as where the forks go through the triple clamps their diameter is larger at this point than the rest of the forks. And I have to tell you I miss the dumped front end and the extra bit of rake.
If anyone in Australia is interested in a Vulcan raked cup kit and a swap over of a modified lower triple tree get in touch with me, all this is just sitting in my shed.
Oh yeah for all those out there that have components that mount to between the upper and lower triple tree (Fatboy head light tin???) the raked cups will cause a headache,as mentioned before the raked cups increase the distance between the upper and lower triple tree.
I hoped this answered a few questions.
Cheers Rich

I'm interested in this setup, but I have a couple concerns.
1. How do you install these in perfect alignement with the frame?
2. How do you insure they stay that way?
I'm sure, if top or bottom were off, even a little, it would be hard on the bearings and it wouldn't handle right.

Alignment in the frame is relatively easy - the cups have a small dimple at the front. They are pinned into the neck with a small roll pin. I did 3* cups and 3* trees on my '06 Night Train. The two offset themselves and the calculators had the trail real close to stock. I tried some 6* trees to see the difference and the bikes handling was affected too much so I went back to 3*I have also lowered the rear 2" and added 2" over tubes. All in all, a nice balance that changes the stance of the bike a bit, but not radically so and definately is very easy to ride. I Changed the treed to blind top tres which was a trip as the cups spread the trees apart and required machining a longer neck bolt. Some fun!!!
Some of the softail trees are already raked 2*. Read my post in this thread, so I won't have to type everything again. Maybe it will give you a little insight into raked cups and trees.
