Default Compensator question..?

Ok so i went and bought the Evolution Industries 30 Tooth Sprocket and new primary chain for the Fatboy. Geared lower to take advantage of the 5th and 6th gear. Talked to a few people that have done it and are very happy. Now after doing a search on here i find out this eliminates the the compensator so it seems. Just what does it do ? Is it like a shock absorber ? I know there is a SE compensator but its stock gearing. I read in a post you need to weld the crank..? Was this a stupid purchase on my part..? Other say it will be fine. Is anybody running this setup. You can see my horsepower and torque number in my signature if that will make a difference. Need your input please.
