Default Newbie with a couple of questions

Hi All,

First time poster. I'm glad I found this forum. I've been reading the forums for a while now and it has a lot of good info and a great online community.

I picked up my brothers '02 Fatboy a couple of months ago. It has 6K on it. I'm no wrench but I managed some basics. I did change the motor/primary/transmission fluids may change the brakes and brake fluid.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Do the dealers do any kind of SE stage 1 on '02 or do I need to find a independent shop? I'm still trying to figure out which cam to pair with it if I do an upgrade.

2. The bike has a minor pitting in both rust and some green/blue on the chrome. My brother lives by the beach. Does anyone know how to clean that up or if there is a detailer in Southern California that could or am I stuck with replacing some chrome parts?

Thanks,
Victor.

Sup loco imo indies do better engine and tune work, pitting and rust, green stuff can be cleaned as long as its only surface if its any deeper your gonna have to replace the parts. Got any pics?

Get some s100 polishing soap to get rid of the pitting. I live by the ocean and when i got my 02 fatboy the guy lived a half a block from the ocean and had no garage. Then use a good metal polish over it like metal gloss and their sealer.

Don't kid yourself. Rust never "cleans up". It is what it is. The metal/paint/chrome has been damaged and any effort to remove it will leave a mark no matter the product or how fine your steel wool or whatever is.

Bob, most of it looks like surface pitting not too bad but in a lot of places. I'll post some pics when I get home.

Drew, thanks for the links. I'll probably order some stuff tonight and see if I can get anywhere with it this weekend.

BassCatcher, I understand that the oxidation of the metal is not reversible but I still would like to get rid of the colored spots and protect against further damage.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Victor

Cover small rust spots with nail polish. It comes in the color chrome at Walgreens.

Hi All,

Most of it can't be seen in the sunlight. You can see it better in artificial light. Gotta love that salt air.

Softone, I'll give that a shot on a couple of spots on the upper fork after I get the rust out. I'll see how it hides it.

Primary:

Right Tailpipe

Oil Tank

Upper Fork

This one is of the corrosion on the lower fork

Give Brasso a try.
Worked great on my chrome pipes that looked something like yours.
It takes a little rubbing effort but stick with it. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Those front forks are best being replaced or spray paint them a flat matched color.
Rustoleum? Tape everything else off and go with gentle sprays.
Cheap way to get through a season and see how they shake out.
Nice bike otherwise!
ps/Black nail polish will work on that black box too.
