First Service
My 09 Crossbones has 660 miles on it now. I found her as a demo model and had only 200 to start. Got a great deal.. Is it true I should have my first service at 800 miles or is it okay to wait until 1000?
Thanks,

They dont do anything and charge you almost $300 and you run risk of least experienced guy will fuxx ur bike up. Buy Redline lubes and K&N oil filter and do it yourself. Harley oil made by SUNOCO...steer clear of it. Buy Redline V twin lube. If you live in hot summer place get 20w60 otherwise 20w50 will do. SummitRacing has it all in one place. Then you can go 5000 until next engine oil and primary chain case oil. Tyranny oil can go to 20000 but I do it 15000.
Buy a shop manual and figure out how to CHECK clutch play and other items noted in users and shop manual under normal maintenance..I just did it all and it came out to about $80 using all synthetics and premium K&N oil filter. You will learn about your bike and you will know who did what....

If they had changed the oil and checked the front end at 200 miles then I would wait until 1000. Otherwise I would do it now.
I just got a new Blackline and will be changing oil in the first 100 or 200. I'll do normal oil changes after that.
Thanks for the great advice on the first service. I will get that manual and make sure things are getting done right. Great advice on the type of oil and filters to use too.

[quote=poppavein;7977828]My 2011 softail owner's manual says that springers are a special case and their first service is at 500 miles and another at 1000. And ongoing maintenance is at 2500 miles vs. 5000 miles for other softails. Looks like the springer front end takes a bit more maintenance.
my 2010 manual says the same

You're supposed to go in at 500 miles for the adjustment/check up of the rockers. You also have to go in every 2500 miles for checking the rockers and getting the steering head filled with some fresh grease.
DO NOT attempt to muck about with the rockers if you don't know what you are doing. You have to disconnect the rockers from the fork which is highly dangerous if not done correctly. Check the service manual!
You can fill the steering head with grease yourself.
Personally, I pump some grease in the steering head and check the torque on the rockers every 2,500 (without disconnecting anything). got about 10,000 miles now and everything still in spec.
