Im on here for my brother. Hes got a 00 fatboy and the speedo just started giving him problems. the symptoms are when he starts the bike everything turns on and works normal, the second he gives it some throttle everything goes blank and the turn signals do not cancel themselves. But once he goes back down to idle, things turn back on again. The bike has no symptoms of wanting to die on him at idle or at speed. He went asking around for some help at the dealer and they told him its most likely the speedo sensor, which makes sense. So he bought it and its doing exactly the same thing with the new one in. Anyone run into something like this? Were kinda at a lose here and he doesnt want to spend any more money on something that isnt the problem lol
I've seen a spiking charging system do this with an 04' FXST. Make sure that your harness is securely plugged in to the back of your speedometer. Check your charging load. Like previously stated, check all grounds..
ok were going to check the wiring now that hes off of work. hopefully we find something...if the speedo turns on when its idling, that would pretty much eliminate the speedo being the problem right?
Take your seat off and hook a multimeter to your battery after you start it up and check and see if your charging system is spiking when you give it throttle.
ok so we looked at the wiring, everything was good there. checked voltage, its charging at 14.2 with almost no throttle and then jumps to 14.8 with a little more throttle, so i guess that was the root of the problems...thanks for the help fellas, hopefully this fixes it.
