I chose to let the dealer install this 27 tooth sprocket. Was quick. Went for the test ride and you can definitely feel the difference. Going through the gears and by the time you're in 5th you're well past 60 in terms of what feels normal, at least to me. Noticed almost no difference in the lower gears. When at parking lot speed you will notice moving a little faster with the same amount of throttle. Before I would ride in 5th down to about 50 mph. Now with the new sprocket that speed is now about 55 mph. Cruising along at 55 you definitely feel the engine working less. Everything (all riding, that is) seems a bit more relaxed now.
I've had the 27T sprocket on now for a few good long rides and I'm so glad I made the change. Before I put on the 27T I did SE 203 cams, a super tuner and hydraulic chain tensioner and had it dynoed. Now with the 27T I'm getting about 4 mpg better gas mileage. The sprocket took away ever so little torque but with the addition of the cams and super tuner it more than made up for any perceived loss of torque from the taller gearing. You can wind out a little longer in each gear with the 27T and before the change I would go through a normal gear progression and when in fifth I would be a just over 50 mph. Now with the sprocket change normal shifting ends with shifting into 5th at about 60. Feels better. So now on the highway I'm getting about 45 mpg where before I was getting just about 41. Not that mpg is important but it's a nice plus.
I absolutely recommend this for anyone not totally focused on stop light to stop light racing.
Did you have to recalibrate the speedo after the installation? I've thought about doing this modification a few times. Definitely way cheaper than doing a Baker 6-speed upgrade.

No recalibration required. I thought it would but I paced my wife in her car at 50 mph and then at 60 mph and my speedo was dead on those speeds. I never tested my speedo before the change to see if it was on the money or not, but it is now. I stopped in at my HD dealer and was asking them how the speedometer worked and no one seemed to know for sure but the parts manager said he thought it worked off the transmission with a sensor. If there is a sensor involved (I'm sure there is) then it is sensing the correct speed now after the sprocket change. I considered going to a six speed but the cost/benefit wasn't there for me. With the 27T it almost seems like you have that sixth gear we're always looking for. With the revs down and going up through the gears I've been in 4th a couple times thinking I was in 5th (lost track of which gear I'm in with a lot of changes in heavy traffic) and then discovering I have another gear.
This mod does not seem to get the attention it deserves.
Agree. After having made the change I'm wondering why the gearing wouldn't be set up this way from the factory. The feel, for me, is so much better. Not sure why more don't make the change. Maybe just not aware of the possibility. Missing out on a nice mod if you don't consider it.
