This is the law in Illinois

" (625 ILCS 5/11‑1403) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11‑1403)
Sec. 11‑1403. Riding on motorcycles. (a) A person operating a motorcycle shall ride only upon the permanent and regular seat attached thereto, and such operator shall not carry any other person nor shall any other person ride on a motorcycle unless such motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person, in which event a passenger may ride upon the permanent and regular seat if designed for 2 persons, or upon another seat firmly attached to the motorcycle at the rear or side of the operator.
(b) A person shall ride upon a motorcycle only while sitting astride the seat, facing forward, with one leg on each side of the motorcycle.
(c) No person shall operate any motorcycle with handlebars higher than the height of the shoulders of the operator when the operator is seated in the normal driving position astride that portion of the seat or saddle occupied by the operator.
(Source: P.A. 84‑602.)"

On the legal matter,
I know in ONtario people have been successfully fighting this ticket as many bikes come stock above that limit, mostly the FLHTP ? police bike ? the Yamaha Virago older models, etc.. so the crown always withdraw the ticket for fear of having the law constitutionally challenged in Ontario.
In most other Canadian provinces it is 'shoulder height' which makes more sense.

I have been with my 12", which is WAY ABOVE the law, but reasonably under my shoulder and for the past 3 years cops just ignored me, they only will stop you for that if you are wearing club colors or really annoyed them.

Some of my fondest memories when I was a kid, riding in the back of my dads pickup...Now I realize the horror of it all...Big brother protects all now.

thanks for posting that Nicky....i was wondering....

I like LEO's....BUT when the small towns have way too much money like around here and hire 3x as many as needed and all they do is sit around writing tickets to pay for the 5 new blacked out Tahoes they got it get annoying...

there should be a law that population dictates amount of LEO's as i am SURE we have 2x TOO MANY of them sitting on thier thumbs here looking for revenue like impounds and tickets.

Hey Dirty, sorry for your loss, but I can't say that you can blame the LEO as much as the laws that caused him to enforce them to his discretion. Should have just hooked him up with the chick in your avatar for a little leniency...

Anyhow, I do disagree with how those laws are. In my parts, the loud pipe debate is up every spring and summer. The local mayors and such are pushing for a no louder than 92 db on mcs. That is rediculous where I speak at 95 db, and even louder when angry. This was caused from some locals that find it a necessity to rip up and down the prestine municipalities with no baffles, pissing off the general public. Slowly idleing through the 30 MPH zones should not be an issue IMO.

On the bar note, makes no sense. Who here has put on bars that they cannot do the basic maneuvres on like being able to fully cut the steering, and control the bike? If that was the case, the bars would not stay, right?? The only thing that I can say may come to a mutual agreement on (or revision of the current laws) would be to do a demonstrated parking lot test (pilons, figure 8's and circles, etc) to prove the rider can control the bike to a competent, safe, controllable state. 1 bike does not fit all. Heck they make sportbikes that meet the db requirements and bar height requirements, but will do 3X the legal controlled access highway speed limits? Any 16 y.o. can do this.

Also, there are NO LAWS governing the ones that can only touch the ground tippy toed or on 1 foot. That can be more dangerous in some aspects than the bars at shoulder height. I see this a lot. Nothing governs seat height from the ground. Who overlooked this??? Laws are not perfect and vary drastically from state to state, province to province and country to country.

Helmets are a good idea. Where they are required, that is an easy fix. No competency here.

The law in Louisiana is confusing to me, "
RS. 191.3. handlebars
B. No person shall operate any motorcycle with handlebars more than fifteen inches in height above the portion of the seat occupied by the operator. " What part of the seat are they taking about?

I'm confused also.If your bars can't be taller than 15 inch above your seat then the stock bars on a sb are illeagal. They are 12 inches.I guess everybody is going to have to run drag bars with no risers.Somebody please explain before I get rid of my 16 inch apes
