Yes pull the top belt guard.
The belt will go on the front sprocket just fine.
Any motorcycle jack will work, as long as it will get it high enough. I use a very cheap motorcycle jack from pepboys. It has worked just fine for the last 7 years. So, the 99 dollar craftsman will be just fine.
I like to use a floor jack under the rear tire to lift the tire back into position.
Also, do not forget to get some anti seize to coat our axles with.
Do not reuse the sprocket bolts, if you can use the cover. Just buy some new bolts, and follow the directions on installing and torquing them. breaking sprocket bolts is expensive and very dangerous.
