Unhappy 2001 FatBoy won't start the 2nd time noise

Hi everyone
I’m just wondering if there would be some to guide me in the right direction before I just hand in my bike to the dealer ship for service or in that case any mechanic.

The problems I’m experiencing with this 2001 FLSTF Fat-Boy is when I go to start it feels or seems not exactly the way it should start up. Now that been said is that it does fire up with the choke pulled out and does warm up fine.

Next when I take it for a ride a good half hour ride and turn the bike off for a short while it doesn’t start up.
The thing is a here a loud clank noise when I try to fire it up again.

Quite loud in deed not sure what it is but not giving up I stop and give it another shot and it won’t fire up clank noise again and then just cranking sound till I stop. then it starts but with stress.

The noise might not be there but it won’t start it seems it start to crank but not firing up. Again not giving up it happens to start again not feeling that it went well but the bike is on fine. And sounds right and smooth.

Just a little info on the bike. This bike I bought was supposedly not ridden very often in ten years and under 500miles. The battery was replaced not with an original with an energizer type brand. I don’t suspect the battery but I will buy an original I as soon I get some extra money. Also the petcock started to drip fuel only in the on position and when in the off no leak.

Does your engine light come on when you start it, go off, then back on for 8 seconds? If so, you have a trouble code stored. Look in the stickys in this forum and it will tell you how to retrieve them.
The 01's had both a crank position sensor and a cam position sensor. My 1st guess would be the cam position sensor is bad. Pretty common on our bikes.
The leaking gas is from a worn out diaphragm in your petcock. You can buy a rebuild kit for it and it's simple to fix.

Angry 2001 FatBoy won't start the 2nd time loud clank noise

For the trouble code I really didn't pay attention. But when the bike starts fine the first there is no trouble code. Most like it happen when I try to start the second time I have probably notice some sort of engine light on.

Hi like I mention before when trying to start the bike for the first time there is a hesitation in the cranking about 1 to 2 second is that normal. Then it starts right up. When the bike is hot I don't experience that sort of hesitation but of course that loud clanking noise.

The crank position sensor has been replaced and the complete starter. The same exactly noise happened again when trying to start the bike a second time hot a loud clank noise.

I stop and try again to start and loud clank noise and just keeps cranking and cranking till she starts.

The bike has about 1000miles
Pls. I would really appreciate the help.

I believe the loud clank noise you are hearing is pre-ignition trying to turn the motor backwards while the starter is trying to crank it forward. What octane are you running? Do you have ethanol in your gas? Make sure you have the correct spark plugs, you might have plugs that are too hot.

Can you take a video of it starting and post it? I am still leaning to the cam position sensor. They only used both a crank and cam position sensor for 2000-2002. Do you know how to make a jumper wire for checking codes? If you have replaced the starter, that is the next thing you need to check. Keep posting and we'll help all we can.

Did it run fine before, and just start doing this all of a sudden (without any changes being made to the exhaust/intake)?

...or did you just buy it, or have you just changed pipes and/or intake?

Does it have stock pipes and air breather? If not, it could be jetted to lean. Running too lean causes it to run hotter, and that can cause a combination of pre-ignition and detonation that will cause it to kick back against the starter (the cause of many knee/ankle injuries on the old kick starts). Low octane gas can cause the problem when the motor is hot, or make it worse if you are running too lean.

When it does that, do you give it throttle as you're cranking? Did you try pulling the choke some?

Since it has a petcock, I assume it's carbureted. Did they put cam position senors on carbureted motors? Can you get trouble codes from the ignition module on a carbureted motor?

My softail standard was doing the same thing; not quite as bad as you describe, but it was kicking back sometimes when I would start it up after getting gas (being shut off for 3-4 minutes). Mine was running lean at the low end because of a clogged/blocked pilot jet. It was an easy fix, solved the issue and improved low end response/torque.
