About two weeks ago, I took my daughter to see her grandpa. The trip is 200 miles one way. On the way home, on a 2 lane highway, I topped a hill going 80 in a 65. Oklahoma Highway Patrol lit me up. I pulled over, laughed when the LEO got out and told him I was guilty as sin, for not paying attention to my speed, because I was just cruising and taking in the beautiful countryside.
He was good guy, said it happens all the time when you are the only person the road. He let me go with a warning.
KeeBee, Why were you stopped the other six times that year? Being a Trooper for 28 years I only stopped a handful of drivers mistakenly, and I told each one that... Otherwise every contact was for an actual violation, regardless if the driver recognized or accepted that fact... Almost every time the driver's attitude dictated the final outcome, but every stop was initiated because of a violation. Six unlawful stops in one year sounds incredible!
Not all law enforcement is as nice as NH or other places. You ought to try out Ohio some time. Between the staties and the little hick towns setting up gauntlets, you're better off walking. One tiny suburb surrounded by Cleveland owns 1/4 mile of I71 and they don't even have an on or off ramp so they have to go out of their jurisdiction just get to the freeway. They write more tickets than the rest of the police in Cuyahoga county on I71 combined and they aren't even allowed to sit there. Been thrown out of court many times but if you get the ticket you have to miss two days of work, minimum, to fight it to get off.
Was driving a friend's car late on a Friday night; he wasn't with me. His license was suspended. Cop came up behind me and tailgated me for five miles while he ran the plate, cross referenced it to the owner and found the suspended license. Next thing I know I'm surrounded by four cop cars. Got yanked out of the car and frisked. Got to do sidewalk aerobics and wasted an hour of my time. Had had nothing to drink, had a valid license and insurance. Tow truck showed up halfway through. Cops were pissed because they wasted an hour of their time when they though they were going to get to tow the car, get a driving under suspension and a possible DUI and got nothing.
Glad the NV cops were cool with you. As a second generation cop, I know my dad was a softie. He would always let the iffy ones go. If they're not dangerous, you have a whole lot more leeway.
Back in my younger days I was a city cop and rarely wrote tickets unless someone was a total jackhole or did something really stupid, or it was my PC for a dope arrest. I always felt bad for the poor highway patrol guys, doing nothing but tickets and traffic accidents all day. We called em "Triple A with a Gun" . No wonder so many are generally irritable!
