Question 2011 Softail Deluxe Discussion

OK so i am new to this forum as well as HD bikes. I came from sport bikes and decided to buy a HD. I didn't know anything about HDs so i started looking at the new bikes and decided that I was going to buy either a deluxe or a fatboy. IMO the deluxe looks better so i bought a new one (didnt like the wheels and fender on fatboy). Knowing nothing about HD i started reading on here and was suprised to hear people saying the deluxe is a girl bike. i read the threads but i dont understand. Also any suggestions from you guys as to where i should start the modifying.

Your first modification should probably be to edit this post.

Ha that's funny, I've been a sportbike guy and looking to change to an HD next year and the Deluxe was what I'm considering. I think it's a great looking bike and I also like it better than the fatboy. It's not as "mean" looking as some of the other bikes but more "classy" to me. I rode a bike with 16" apes last year and was shocked how comfortable it was on my back on a long ride. That's the one thing I don't like on the deluxe was the pull back risers and bars.

Welcome to the wonderful world of H-D...

And the only fraternity on the planet where almost no two people ever agree on anything!

If you have been around the Harley universe for any length of time you have probably picked up hints of the Deluxe being MARKETED TOWARDS WOMEN as apposed to being labeled a "Girls' Bike". The reason being is that there are certain features of the Deluxe that appearantly fit what is supposed to be the "average" woman (smaller person). The Deluxe has a lower suspension than other Softails (or at least until the Crossbones and Fatboy Lo came along) and its seat moves the rider closer to the front of the bike. These two features mean that a smaller person (which evidently means girls only to some folks) can reach the floor better as well as the handle bars and foot controls.

But honestly, I would not be put off by such generalizations. There are plenty of dudes rollin' on some sweet Deluxe's and only the most narrow minded of riders will try to make you feel bad about your bike.

As for where should you start modifying?

That is such a loaded question when presenting it to the Harley community. So many people have different ideas and it can all make your head spin if you don't know the score!

So here's my 2 cents. Ride the bike for a while get used to it and everything about it as it is. You'll find that you will start to get a feel for what it is YOU want to modify. You may want some practical stuff like bags and windshield or you may want some pipes and air cleaner for performance. I think you will know what best suits you. Then you can come here for advice on specific things YOU want.

When I first bought my Bones in 2008, I knew nothing about any Harley forums nor did I start trying to roll with Harley riding groups. I just got on my Bones the very next day and commuted to work and did so for several months. My bike and my situations and finaly my taste in things started telling me what was most important to me without any outside influence. It made it so much easier to then start doing research on specific mods.

Maybe that approach isn't for everyone. I'd just hate to see you do something to your bike that you later regret because someone who is totally biased about something convinced you that it was a good idea.

Anyway. Good luck and welcome the the very disfunctional Harley Davidson family!!!

I told you so!!!

You'll have to develop a thick skin fast my friend! You'll learn real fast that by nature the Harley community can me the most hateful towards itself than any you might come across. And when you get such folks sitting behind the safety and anonimity of the internet they will make all sorts of comments to a person that they would probably never have the brass to make in a face-to-face situation. In such cases you'll just have to learn to tune that $h!t out and dig for the valuable input that some folks are willing to offer...

I love mine so far bacon1 and I bought it just by picking the model I liked best. I figured if i wanted something sporty looking I would stay with the 1000RR so why not go with something classy looking....IMO of course.

Wellcome and enjoy your new bike ..... as was mentioned dont rush your mods look for the edge that makes your bike stand out not the same as everyone else's .... and by the way the Deluxe is a beautiful bike before mods so either way your on a winner! ....

Congrats on the deluxe..very nice bike..check out some of the pics one here, the way they can be setup is only limited to your imagination and wallet.
I went with rush pipes on the crossbones..deep, pretty loud
If you have a good set of headphones, youtube can be helpful in choosing pipes
Enjoy your bike!
