Angry Bad Service Day

I had service issues today. I have a 2011 Fat Boy Low 96", and had a stage 1, K & N and V and H big radius 2 into 1's, when I first bought the bike. The dealer dynoed it, and those numbers were used for this comparison I was looking for the best bang for the buck and more power out of my 95. My dealer said SE 204 cams and a great dyno run will give me a nice, noticeable punch in torque. Was quoted $800 complete and bill came in at $1200+. Worse than that my torque #s went from 96.74 to 98.51.HP went from 79.2 to 84.07. To boot the numbers from 3000 RPMs and lower were the exact as the first run in April, no improvement with the cam mod. That's it. The bike ran a tad smoother, but these numbers are not what was promised, nor expected...and the bill was not what was quoted. They discounted it down to $1100...so I wasted over a thousand dollars and basically got nothing for it. They are a great dealership but I got had on this service. How do those numbers sound for my set up? Dean

How did they explain going from $800 to $1200?

I've had an excellent relationship with them. They moded out my bike so I can ride it safely with a prosthetic leg. The also did a very cool kick stand mod, because I can't make the kick stand at all. The service writer said point blank "I never said $800". I won't need to get future quotes in writing unless they make good on this.

I would have thought you'd get a little more gain then that, but your numbers aren't that bad to start with. Makes me think twice about my exhaust choice. I'd love the power the 2-1 puts out, just not in love with the look. I'm getting the same HP and less torque with a 103 and 255 cams. Still, if they promised you more for less, I'd be pissed off too.

Don't confuse a Quote with an Estimate... What was their reason for the difference?

Do your self a favor and bring it to a real Dyno/Tuner place.

Your numbers aren't that bad... I am at 94HP and 104tq (delta ~7ft lbs torque and 10 HP) with quite a few more mod$ done. While the numbers are not impressive on mine, I have a fairly flat torque curve and it makes HP all the way to redline. The seat of the pants dyno is happy.

Peak numbers don't mean squat. It's the area under the curve that you're concerned with. Presumably, you picked up more area under the torque curve after the cam change. A friend changed exhaust on his 103 recently, got lower overall numbers, but a much broader torque curve and he's all smiles.

It seems to me that 85/100 for a 96 with bolt in cams, decent exhaust and stock heads is very much within the expected range for a well tuned bike. There is no magic set of cams that will make huge power compared to all other cams, but everyone still looks for them. Without seeing a dyno chart, it's pretty pointless to try and speculate on whether or not you got a good tune. You hear it all the time, not to get all spooled up over dyno numbers, and comparing your results to other bikes results is pretty meaningless. The high flyers tend to get posted and reposted on the forums, which is unfortunate, because it leads to unrealistic expectations.

Bumping your performance up from where you are now would involve either a displacement increase and/or a re-working of your heads. Either way, it's more $$$ out of pocket.

Yes....I just need to figure out how. When I went to attach it yesterday it said my file was to large to upload. I'm not tech savy. Any advice is appreciated. I'll take the dealers name off. The main issue here is what I was told the se 204s would do for my bike and then the overcharge and not being able to correct a warranted problem. I trusted my dealers service department for correct info....as I mentioned I'm not tech savy .....and so I trust the professionals around me for accurate info. If they would have said, bolt on cams aren't going to give you much, then I never would have had it done. I was directly told, "oh yeah you're gonna see a noticeable bump in torque, about 10 ft lbs and a little with HP. when I questioned the HP....that's when I got the lesson of "torque gets you there, HP keeps you there". I said great, then that is what I'm looking for. And that's how it played out. I even asked the service writer to discuss what I was getting with my mechanic and they have another performance guy there.....so this wasn't some small miscommunication .....I spent weeks making sure this is what would give me what I was looking for.
