I am looking to replace my handle bars and hand controls. I would like to have all the cables run internally. I dont know if its possible but I want everything internal (Clutch cable, brake cables, throttle).
Question:
Is what I want Possible?
What do I need to look out for when making a purchase to ensure Im ordering equiptment that matches my goal? Do the handle bar and control product literature need to contain certain magic words that I need to be aware of. I hear things like internal wiring enabled and predrilled for internal wiring. Is there anything else?
Finally, Are there any dangers or pitfalls in having all the cables run internally?
I can tell you from personal experience that running the wiring internally is pretty simple and yes you do need bars that indicate pre-drilled for wiring. As far as clutch and throttle cables goes, I am not completely sure, but I do know that you can get a twist clutch. For installing all the wiring for a stock harley and cables through the bar, I think it would be difficult as it was a chore to get just the wiring through my bars. As you indicated in your post, I believe you would need to get new controls and rewire the bike as i do not think you would be able to have the controls on the bars with this type of set up.
There are some real nice options to do it, but having it all internal will double the cost of the bar swap. I think it was Joker Machine that had a real nice setup for them. I'll see if I can find a link.
ETA, it does not appear to be them, but I will find it.
You can also switch to a hydraulic clutch setup and have the hard line made inside the bars on both sides. Both brake and clutch. very clean setup but, also not cheap.
I have an internal throttle (Streamline) on my bike with custom bars from BR's Custom Bars. You will need two holes on both sides of the bottom of the bars (for the clutch and throttle cables) and one hole in the center (for the control wires). I went from four external cables to two. I have 1.25 inch bars and I believe if you are going to do all internal wiring, brake line and internal throttle and clutch cables you will need 1.5 inch bars. Here are some more options to consider:
