OK, I was thinking about putting floating rotors on the Crossbones, specifically the HD vivid black. Now, the P&A book says the rear fits, the front rotor says it will not fit XL, XR, or Springer. My dealer has a CVO Springer in the showroom right now. It has the vivid black rotors. The Crossbones in the P&A book that is all dressed up also has these rotors. My parts guy is going to call HD Monday to find out what's up. As omeone pointed out in a previous thread, if you go to the HD site, you can get the parts list for the Crossbones in the book. The P/N listed for the rotor is the one that says it won't fit Springer. Another guy I spoke to, who is also a HD tech said he believes the Crossbones has a floating caliper in the front and thinks that may be why they say it won't work. He said floating rotor + floating caliper would be sketchy. I hadn't ever heard of a floating caliper, but I am not doubting him because of my ignorance. Anyone have any insight on this at all?
The only insight I can offer is I have seen those rotors in Crossbones in the pictures section. Pm one of the guys. More often then not parts fit multiple bikes even when the parts guy says they won't. When it comes to brakes though maybe talk to a mechanic?
All I can say is that even the parts book can say something doesn't fit a certain bike and then the same book will have a photo of that bike/part combination. Not sure why Harely is not more careful about sorting those things out. I am specifically thinking of the front springer horn kit that is listed in the parts book. It does not include the Crossbones as a bike that this horn is compatible with but then they have a customized green Crossbones with that same horn on it and when you look at the parts list it is the same part number.
That is interesting that you say that about the horn, the parts guy here is thinking that maybe when they say "except springer" they are not including the crossbones. We will see I guess. As for speaking to a mechanic, re-read my original post. It was a hd tech that mentioned something about floating calipers
I read that the first time. Hd tech? Is that a journeyman hd mechanic or a parts guy? All I'm sayin is most "parts guys" know what the parts book says but don't have any hands on experience to draw from. It says in the book as quoted by the parts guy the forward control shifter doesn't fit my floorboards but voila it's on there.
I'm the one who started the thread you're referring to in your first post because I was and am looking to do the same thing. I went to one of my local dealers last weekend and I showed them the photo in the 2011 parts book then I showed them the page with the rotors and where every single front rotor....every one of them, said "except Springers". Nobody at the parts counter had an answer. We went online and looked at the photo of the Crossbones with the vivid black rotors and sure enough, they're listed on the parts list for that photo. Nodody had an answer and they were going to call the factory on Tuesday to find out, but I haven't heard back. I went to the shop in back and one of the veterans said that most likely it does not apply to the Crossbones. He said it had something to do with the way the older Springers had the rotor mounted on the other side and the way that the speedo (or something like that) was connected to it. There is no such thing as a "floating" caliper. They're all bolted on. So, they said go ahead and order them and if they don't work then there's no obligation on my part at all. The consensus is that they'll work fine, so I'm going to order them and have them installed this weekend or next. Done and done.
thanks, that's kind of what I am hearing too. I have done the research, there is a floating caliper, but it sounds decieving. What it is is the pads actually float on a single piston caliper such as the one on the Springer front end. Nothing I am finding indicates that it will be an issue. Daddyknuck also confirmed that he has these rotors on his Crossbones, direct bolt on, no issues what so ever....
