Changing the oil/filter and primary oil for a friend in a 2002 Fatboy. What's the amount of oil required for the engine and primary? Is it 3.5 quarts for the motor and 1 quart in the primary? Just wanna be sure!
Nope. 3.5 quarts is if the motor is completely dry. I'd say about 3 for the motor. Add 2 and then let it run through and add to desired point. Primary is 22-26oz's I beleive. OVerfilling the prikmary can cause poor clutch performance. the 07 adn newer bieks are 1 quart in the primary. Now time to preach, get a service manual.
I agree on the SM but my buddy is on vacation in Myrtle Beach so I'm working off of a 93/94 FX/Softail SM which I use for my chopper. There is always confusion on the primary oil amount and I swear that's the way the MOCO wants it (dry primaries are the answer to that freaking problem)! Anyhoo, I was hoping to rely on my biker brothers at HDForums for some quick assist.
The engine oil I can figure out and I'll go with the 2 3/4" from the clutch adjusting screw down measurement for the primary and that should give me about 28 ozs. Unless someone disagrees! Please speak up!
Fill oil tank with no more than 3.5 quarts
(3.3 liters) of oil. Mine took 3 and a friend's took just less than that.
Pour 26 oz. of primary chaincase lubricant in through the clutch inspection
cover opening. The primary chaincase lubricant level is
acceptable when lubricant is visible between clutch and
inner wall of chaincase with motorcycle with motorcycle
standing upright.
Using the 93/94 SM measurement gave me exactly 26ozs...so, that hasn't changed and 3 quarts in the motor filled her up perfectly. Sweet!
Thanks guys...

P.S. I'm gonna be hitting you guys up for front/rear wheel axle torque specs in a bit. Going to replace his front/rear wheels and rubber. Sorry about the SM...I feel your pain!
My manual says 3.5 quarts with filter change. I started with 3 and it was over filled. 2.75 quarts would have been perfect. I put a measuring cup under the primary to see what came out. The manual said 26-28 oz I believe but 33 oz came out so I put 1 qt back in and its been doing great.
