Default fuel gauge inop

Hey all-
2004 Deuce, bought it from good friends dad who told me he replaced the tins and ever since the gas gauge reads empty and its starting to really annoy me. 14k miles, EFI, tune. Anything I should try prior to taking the tank off? This is my first Harley so i'm not sure how the fuel gauge even works. Thanks for any advice.

Check the connector under the forward part of the left tank. If you don't see it run your finger up under the tank, it should be there AND connected.

It might also be a bad gauge... depending on what type of fuel gauge is installed on the Deuce. I believe there have been numerous reports of HD LED gauges kicking the bucket.

HD fuel gauges are notorious for going bad. Get used to using your trip meter and just be done with the fuel gauge.

I have had my float get stuck before. Maybe check that...

I couldn't tell you how accurate my fuel gauge is since I always go by mileage. I don't trust fuel gauges on motorcycles or boats.

. . . speaking of mileages. I had an experiment on Monday where I was at the tail end of a 500 mile day (Watkins Glen to Columbus, OH) and got a little lost in back country. Not a gas station in 30 miles . . . and my reserve fuel light was on for a long time. Well, I just made it to a station with 220 miles on the tripmeter. The pumped gas was 4.8 gallons. So I figure that 220 is a good figure to keep in my head for maximum range before foot power takes over . . . .

I have found that the 5 gallon tanks are a hair more than 5 gallons. I don't have a trip meter or gas gauge, so once or twice i've inadvertently pushed the limit. I've put just a hair more than 5 gallons in my tank before, but the bike literally was stumbling a couple times during the last couple miles to the gas station.

It is easy to screw up the fuel gauge connector if you don't know what you're doing and/or don't have the right tool for compressing the pins so that you can take the wires out of the connector and pull them up through the tube that goes through the gas tank.

Thx for the replies. I'll start at the connector. Can I reach the float from the fill side with a coat hanger or something, to try and dislodge it if that is the problem?
