Default Stator question

Thanks in advance.
After riding my 94 fatboy to work today, the battery was dead when decided to run to the store. I was able to bump start it with no issues riding home. After looking things over, I pulled the plug connecting the regulator to the stator and saw one of the female connectors was noticeably deeper set in the rubber housing. All that said, the stator tests out fine, so I hate to replace it. How much free wire is behind the plug? Is it possible to pull the connector out an inch or so without causing damage to the stator? The rubber is a bit gummy, so I'm going to have to replace it eventually, but.....
