Default Inner Primary- Special Tools?

I started this in the Primary/Transmission forum, but maybe it'll get more looks here.
I want to put a chrome inner primary housing on my 2002 FXSTS. I've been an auto tech for 35 years, and between me and the two other guys in the shop we have pretty much every automotive hand tool made. Are there any special tools that are a must have to do this job, or are there any good substitutions for any of the special tools?

Here is an old thread from the touring section with a pictorial and how to make the special tool. Primary bits of the touring and softail bikes are practically identical.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...ed-help-3.html

On the later models they say not to use this stepped tool but a locking bar which is basically a piece of flat stock cut to the right size to block the teeth of the clutch/crank sprocket.

No idea when they changed the tool ... but in my 2009 manual they stress the use of the locking bar and not the stepped one.

You will also need new sealing fasteners!

Actually the main tool you need that you can't make yourself is the Service Manual for you bike!

The left starter bolt is a PITA to get to without removing the oil tank by our shop mechanic always seems to get it out. Not sure how.

The locking bar looks like 1/8-3/16" flat stock. Might be easier to make something up for that than the stepped tool? Thanx for the tip on replacing those fasteners.

Just checked out the link for the stator replacement. That will come in handy. Thanx again.

www.georges-garage.com sells the locking bar for $26, if you're not interested in making your own. www.mbsmfg.com sells it for $15.

You'll also need to replace the crankcase gasket and primary cover gasket. Might as well replace the drain plug o-ring while you're at it. By the way, the service manual for my '07 FLSTF also warns against using the stepped tool.

I just fold up a towel and use that as a locking tool
