Was going to remove my inner primary, the shop manual says to use the inner primary race tool to get the race off.Is the tool really required? The price on one is $304.If that's the case I'll just take it to the dealer, since I'll probably never use the tool again. Thanks
You have an older machine! Without that tool you will not get the race off. That same tool will be needed if you want to reinstall the race.A solution is the Shovelhead bearing and seal conversion.Once converted you will never need that tool again.

It's a 02 EGC,58,000 miles.I guess it needs the tool.-Thanks
Gary, see if you could rent the tool or see if the dealer would work with you.Either way convert your primary to the Shovelhead version it is a boltin and permanent fix.Zippers sells the kit.Good Luck Dog
you don't have to remove the race to remove the inner primary. You have to remove the compensator and clutch pack and chain. You just pull them off as an assembly. The primary will slip right off after you remove the bolts that hold it to the case and transmission. It looks to me that that you only need to remove the race if your replacing it or getting into the transmission. I didn't have to remove the race.

You don't need to remove the race to remove the inner primary. If you did need to remove it all you have to do is carefully cut through it most of the way with a Dremel tool and cutoff wheel (being careful not to cut into the shaft) give it a few light pops with a chisel and it falls off.
