Default Mod Overkill...Such A Thing?

Dressing up a bike is very personal and I for one appreciate that. But sometimes when I see a bike all done up it can be a lil to much for the eye. I seen bikes that look awesome with just a few changes compared to ones that have all the latest and pricey customs thrown on. Don't get me wrong, to some all the eye candy looks awesome...and like myself, prefer the bike to flow as one and simple to the eye with only a few mods to stand out.

When I first got planning for my bike's goodies this summer, I didnt realize how much research, vision and thought was involved. It's very easy to fall into 'hey I want that' trap without thinking about the big picture.

Anyways just my rambles....and I luv all your guys' rides!

Cheers.

I go along with you 100%. Most of the time less is more. I am at the point where I have to step back and really think about my next move. It's hard to stay with the theme you are going for after seeing so many cool rides on this forum. In my case cost is a factor so I have to plan in stages. It would be nice to have an extra 15k and get everything done at once. Unfortunately after just buying another toy(2012 Genesis 3.8 Track Edition Coupe) my wife wants a new kitchen.

Another vote for "no overkill". Staying with a consistent theme front to back, top to bottom, and making everything flow and be coordinated takes patience, a good eye, and and discipline. There are a lot of bikes with different themes on the same bike and things added on just for the sake of adding things on. When you get to the point of wanting to add a bunch of covers, stop and take a breather. Be consistent and don't overdo a "look".

A theme sure works better than bolting every JP Cycles catalog part on a motorcycle. But on occasion, I have seen a few super flashy bikes I like. The Deluxe guys seem pretty good at bolting a gazzilion parts on their motorcycles without ending up with gaudy nightmares.

I absolutely agree with the less is more theme for my personal ride. My mods have been centered around comfort (bars, seat, backrest, crotch cooler), function (passenger grab rails, tourpak w/wrap around backrest -the wife's throne, windshield bag) and I'll admit to vanity (American Custom slip ons). ON THE OTHER HAND -

Nothing quite like strolling around a rally, gawking at all the bling and mods that other riders have made. Some of the purtiest bikes I have seen have gone WAY over the top. I'm not saying that I would want to ride one of them but they sure are wild to look at! That is one of the things that I love about owning a Harley. Mods are readily available from a never ending list of venders and innovators.

I guess you can call it overkill, I prefer the term "tacky". For example, I think it's tacky when you see someone with the entire Wiilie G. Skull collection on their bike. Now I'm not against one or two pieces but anything more is tacky. This is strictly my opinion of course.

Tastes differ and someone making the bike into what they want is what it's about.

Some can't draw a stick figure but think they're an artist.

If it bothers you that much, park next to their bike to make yours look that much better.

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder is how I will approach this subject. I myself like my mods simple, clean and plain, I guess one could call it. I do not even like the Harley insignia on my bike, no willie G stuff, flags, maltese crosses, swasticas, lightning, flames and so on and on. I do have a small fortune in chrome on my bike but it is all simple and it's all real, Harley chrome, NO covers, example, inner primary. It's an inner chrome primary not a cover. I also go for performance 1st over cosmetics too. I never wanted a bike that looked good but was a dog. I don't drive it hard or race it but it is there for me when I need it, example, getting out of traffic trouble, passing or getting on a highway. I have a good deal on money in the motor and the tranny but that was what I wanted, a bike with some b*#@, not a dud over how it looks. These is all my personal choices though and means nothing. I have seen many very sweet bikes on here both in looks, ballsy or both together. I have seen bikes on here both to wild for me and to mild for me but that does not mean they are NOT sweet bikes! It's just a differant class of bikes from what I ride and for what I am going after. When will I be done??? I have no clue! It's hard when see something here that you know would just look very hot on your bike to ignore it. I am also single, will never get married again, great job and my kids are raised so I may not have the financial constraints that others may have too. I have! Trust me, there were times I could not afford gas in a bike let alone bling but that is all behind me, I hope! I think every single person on here has a nice bike, no matter what it looks like, no matter how it runs. As long as the owner is happy, it's all good in my book!
