Default Tech question about apes

I'm looking to put apes on my 99 Heritage, but hoping to avoid changing the cables, due to budget. Anyone know how high I can go without switching stock cables? Appreciate any info

they are large primates that can be trained to get on the bike, but don't **** them off or forget to feed them. would suggest only one ape at a time on your bike!

Heritage bars are NOTHING like 10 - 12 apes. Heritage bars are designed to be set low ie: closer to the body and lower to the knees. They are the worst bars Harley ever put out.

A better set of bars would be the 10" bars off a Street Bob or Wide Glide. I swapped them on the RK and the cables fit fine. Might have to double check the Heritage but I'd be willing to bet they'd fit. Anyway, the 10's off one of those bikes are much much better with regards to wrist angles and comfort.

My stock bars have about a 6" lift, way too low. I was hoping to stretch it out to about 12". I have braided cables for the throttle, clutch & brakes, and I think they'll work. I'm just worried about the wiring

What???? Heritage bars are made to be pulled back - toward you?? If you are a short dude and can not reach forward - sure, why not.

Because Heritage handles, controls, go up slightly, this puts the hands in a higher position then the bars. Mini apes do not do this. Hence, Heritage bars are equivalent to ~12" apes. Read and learn

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...nt-please.html

Lots of touring bikes install Heritage bars also. Not sayin these are great bars, just sayin by replacing with 12" mini apes the OP is not gonna gain a thing in terms if height.

Do these look close to the riders knees? And this is Moco advertisement, all different years.

Heritage99,

Personally I feel your looking at this from the wrong angle. Don't swap to taller bars based on your present cable length. Determine handlebar height based on what is comfortable for you. Keep an eye out for bikes with apes, try to meet the owners and ask them if you can sit on their bikes to get a feel for the taller bars and determine what height is best for you.

If you're still using the original stock cables on your 99, it may be time to replace them anyway.
