Me and my buddy got jacked this summer. Funny thing is BOTH of us were wearing DOT helmets but we got stopped simply because my buddy's "looked like a non-DOT". The copper did a full on pull and tug and was all but ready to write a ticket when he finally gave up and realized these were legal helmets. Now, I have heard every challenge in court is a victory for the defendant, but its still a day of missed work to prove your point. The cops are absolutely writing tickets for non-DOT in Virginia. No longer worth it for me.

Like I said, your choice where law allows.
I don't have any actual statistical information but I am sure it is out there.
Oh ya do wear a seat belt, again your choice I guess but there are laws out there.
Cops in Mass never really hassled about non-dot helmets.. A store right down the street sells the novelty helmets and right next to them are fake DOT stickers that they sell for $.99.. I have ridden to the air force bases and they laugh at the fake helmets and can tell the difference from good distance but have never hassled me about tickets, they just say i need to wear a full face on base.
Hey Motown, where did you get stopped? Let me guess - Royal Oak?

I told him someone gave it to me when i bought the bike and that I am too stupid to know the difference...
He let me off but I hate getting hassled by some Po-dunk sheriff on a nice Sat. morning.
Im looking for a low profile DOT...you can fight city hall but it costs you $125 and two points.
All that aside the helmet turned out good, nice job.
not worth it. when you get popped by the cop who knows the difference, and wont let you ride away from the ticket scene until someone brings you a LEGAL DOT HELMET. yeah, they can do that. just like making you sit til a person shows up with a motorcycle endorsement.

Riding unlicensed is different than a safety infraction. If you're in your cage with a broken seatbelt, can they make you sit until someone brings and installs a new seatbelt? No. If your taillight or headlight is out do you sit until someone brings you a new bulb? No.
I dont think they can legally detain you for a safety infraction. Anyone in law that can chime in?
