Maybe he was saying they recommend one, because I'm not aware of any DoD policies requiring full face helmets. Although, we did have a post commander at one time, if able, would have banned bikes on post altogether. Glad he didn't have that authority.
Yeah I haven't heard of any either, however when I was at Nellis I do recall that 1/2 helmets were not allowed. It wasn't enforced, but it was policy. Don't remember if it was just base policy or what. I'm surprised that the AF hasn't tried to go the full face route yet. I had a base commander when I was at Aviano that was like that. He hated bikes and voiced it several times that he would ban motorcyles if he could. All because as a kid he rode one without learning how first and wrecked. Yeah cause that was the bikes fault.
Really Guy.... I ride around 5000 miles a year without a helmet why should the 300 of those that are out of state be with a DOT. I personally think helmet laws are b.s. if I want to kill my self it should be my own choice. Although I do agree with the law that under 21 you should be required too espically when theres a kid on the back of your bike. Im not against DOT helmets unless there on my head!
HDC - I'm with you and hear what you are saying, but for those few 300 or so miles, I think I'd pick me up one of the cheap DOT shells from leatherup.com or where ever for about $30 It'd be a lot cheaper than that one time a pissed off cop pulled you.
Those Daytona shells posted earlier in the thread look pretty nice. Thinking about ordering one for Santa to bring me...lol

NC D'LUXE,
If you wear a half helmet I really suggest trying the hawk style half. The front brim works really well looking into the sun. You can place the helmet where that brim shades your eyes some and it works like a hat brim. It's not much but beats the hell out of nothing. Just my 2 cents.
Riding unlicensed is different than a safety infraction. If you're in your cage with a broken seatbelt, can they make you sit until someone brings and installs a new seatbelt? No. If your taillight or headlight is out do you sit until someone brings you a new bulb? No.
I dont think they can legally detain you for a safety infraction. Anyone in law that can chime in?
tell that to the two motorcops i know here. well back when we had a helmet law. yes i seen it happen right here in town. hell i am the guiy got called a few times to go ride a bike away, and bring a dot helmet out there. thing is the cop can do what he wants on the side of the road, you know what they say, you can beat the ticket, you cant beat the ride.
the city here had a policy for along time, if stopped and could not show proof of insurance you did not get a ticket and go on your way. car went to impound and stayed until you produced insurance. this started right after an uninsured driver, who recieved a ticket and drove on, ran a redlight mere blocks from the ticket scene, and killed another motorist. family got word of the ticket, and city got its *** handed to them. since that driver was not supposed to be on the road, and wouldnt have been an accident if the law would have removed the vehicle from the road. dont see any difference. yeah, a tailight out gets you a ticket ( not always, here if its a commercial vehicle it will be fixedbefore moving).

Thanks for the heads up on the hawk style lids. I've looked at those but I just wasn't sure on it. I bought some prescription WileyX SG1's goggles with the interchangeable lens so I've got the grayed out lens for day use and clears. When I was younger I didn't remember tearing up so much riding with just sunglasses on, but it must be because I'm old (LOL) I had to break down and get goggles.
