Default speed reading to fast, need help.

Newbie here. I just bought a 2000 custom and the previous owner installed a new speed sensor because the original one gave out. He had it unplugged because it was reading 35mph faster then I was ridding. Upon inspection I noticed the female end of the plug was missing and the wire was almost a mile long and had a burnt spot. I was going to buy a new sensor from the factory to see if that solved the problem. My question is are the factory wires on the sensor made that long or did he buy a Aftermarket one and what else can cause this problem?

Just go to the HD dealer and buy the new speed sensor and replace the current one. This should fix your problem and is easy to replace!
